School is located in eastern part of Croatia, the part which was severely destroyed during the war 20 years ago. Devastation caused by the war can be still felt. This area is mostly agricultural with very poor industry, which resulted in a large percentage of unemployed people who have been experiencing crises for almost 10 years. However,it wasn’t like that in the past when this region was one of the richest in the country so it is difficult to accept that you live in a disadvantaged area. All these reasons reflected on the choice of schools for most students. In spite the fact that they can’t get a job after finishing this school, they choose it. They hope to be able to study at university finish it and get well-paid job unlike their parents who, quite often, live on social benefits. Our school has, 435 students,. It offers 3 different courses that students can choose from: general , maths and language course. Mostly students choose general course because they haven’t decided about their career yet. Regular competitions in different subjects are held every year proving how successful our students are especially in history, languages, science ,sport ,choir singing. The school has experience in cooperation with other schools from abroad. From 2006-2008 we participated as a silent partner in the project "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes of Europe " with partners from Poland, Slovakia Italy, France and Turkey. Students and teachers gained valuable experience about differences and similarities among countries. Moreover, they practiced and improved their English, they learnt how to be tolerant, how to accept differences, how to lead multicultural dialogue and learnt what is Europe and life in Europe like. Our students participate regularly in video conferences, debates or presenting our traditional food to the world in Food for thought conference. More about us at www.gimnazija-agmatosa-dj.skole.hr |

It is located in the city of Kalamata, in the south-west Peloponnesus. The area surrounding the city is mostly agricultural with a slight percentage of developing industries. Most of our students come from a low socio-economic background and many of the families in our school have been experiencing crises that has overtaken the country in the last years. About 15% of our student population is children of immigrants from other countries, mainly Albania and Bulgaria but also some former USSR countries and recently we have a few cases of Middle Eastern background,.
The school is also the delegated school in our city for students with special educational needs such as ADHD, Asperger syndrome (AS), ADS, dyslexia, etc. As a result, there are a number of teachers at the school trained in dealing with students who cannot perform at the same rates as others. The school tries to provide these students with the possibility to achieve a successful education through individual learning strategies, so that they are able to develop self-confidence, solidarity and respect. Mozaik Human Resources Development is a non-profit organisation that is focused on cultural, social and vocational integration of disadvantaged young people. We have been offering various trainings, programs and vocational or educational counselling service to lead them for true choices for their career life and increase the level of knowledge or awareness on democracy, citizenship, social media and civil society.
We have been organising trainings on how to use social media effectively in cooperation with trainers on this issue. The aims of these trainings are to develop their skills and knowledge level on various social media tools as well as creating an environment to discuss about the challenges, the positive and negative impacts of using social media and its future. These trainings consist of both theoretical information and practical implementations and can be very effective opportunity for young people to have a new hobby or turn towards social media to work in this field. Our other experience on this issue was a democracy project. We have carried out the project to get together young people with decision makers to become familiar with democracy mechanism. The aim of this project was to increase youngsters’ knowledge on taking picture, camera shooting, using social media tools and interview techniques before interview with decision makers. The framework of activities or projects can vary by young people’s needs and the objectives that we plan to achieve within the scope of implementation. Apart from these trainings, we have been trying to change their perceptions on social media in positive way because in some cases media can affect their life negatively. We have organising some conferences and workshops for young people and their parents to draw attention to its negative sides and reduce these effects as much as possible. We have been cooperating with Counselling Research Centres, Governorship and many schools in local area to increase the number of beneficiaries and provide the most effective information. Escuela Profesional La Salle is located in Paterna, a town of about 70.000 inhabitants in the outskirts of Valencia, Spain's third largest city located on the East coast of Spain. The school is in the middle of Alborxí, a depresssed neighboorhood of Paterna, which has received an increasing immigrant population coming from other parts of Spain and, during the last decade, other parts of the world ( South America, Romania, Magrib, China...) The low socioeconomic status of its inhabitants has deteriorated during the last 8 years due to the crisis which has shot up the unemployment rate.
There are about one thousand students enrolled in Escuela Profesional La Salle and there are about 80 teachers, divided in different sections: Pre-School Education; Primary and Secondary Education, and Vocational Training. Our school has different measures of attention awareness and programmes in coordination with the local community to be able to control the absenteeism among students, so like drugs prevention. Currently, there are three programmes adressed to students with a risk of school dropout from the Secondary Obligatory Education. There are also a few other older students who quit their studies too soon and now they come back to obtain their diploma which will allow them to have better opportunities to look for a job. On the other hand, it is a multilingual school which has been putting into practice CLIL learning methods. More about us at www.eplasalle.es |
